JEE Main Category-Wise Cutoff (2023–2025)

The qualifying cutoff is the minimum NTA percentile score needed to be included in the JEE Main merit list. Only candidates meeting the category cutoff are considered for JEE Advanced registration and JoSAA NIT/IIIT/CFTI counselling. Cutoff changes slightly every year based on difficulty and candidate count.

CategoryCutoff 2025Cutoff 2024Cutoff 2023Qualifies For
General (CRL)88.9189.7390.79JEE Advanced + NIT/IIIT/CFTI (AIQ)

OBC-NCL73.6174.9273.61NIT/IIIT/CFTI OBC seats
SC51.9752.3951.97NIT/IIIT/CFTI SC seats
ST37.2338.1837.23NIT/IIIT/CFTI ST seats
PwD (Any cat.)0.110.110.11PwD reserved seats
JEE Advanced cutoff is separate: The cutoff to qualify for JEE Advanced is the General category CRL cutoff (88.91 percentile in 2025). Even if you are SC/ST and qualify at 51.97 percentile for NIT seats, you still need the ~88.91 percentile mark to be eligible for JEE Advanced. SC/ST candidates have a separate, lower JEE Advanced cutoff, but it is significantly higher than the NIT qualifying cutoff.

State Quota vs All India Quota in NITs — Explained

One of the most misunderstood concepts in JEE Main counselling — understanding state quota vs all India quota (HS vs OS seats) can dramatically change your college strategy.

What is State Quota?
50% of seats in NITs are reserved for candidates from the home state of the NIT. These are called "home state quota" seats or "HS" seats. The remaining 50% are "All India Quota" (OS — other state).
State Quota eligibility
To claim state quota seats in an NIT, you must have passed Class 12 from a school in that state (or the state must be your domicile state as per NTA records). Your state of eligibility is recorded at JEE Main registration.
Why does this matter?
State quota seats have a LOWER cutoff rank than All India quota seats. A student from Rajasthan may get NIT Jaipur CS branch at rank 3,000 via home state quota, whereas All India quota for the same branch closes at rank 1,500.
Strategic implication
If your rank is borderline (e.g., rank 4,000–8,000), you may get a better branch at your home state NIT via state quota than at a different state NIT via AIQ. Always fill home state NIT choices explicitly during JoSAA.
IITs and IIITs
IITs have NO state quota — all seats are All India Quota only. IIITs have their own specific quota rules (some have state quotas, some don't). IIIT Hyderabad has no state quota; IIIT Allahabad has a UP state quota.
