What is JEE Main? — JEE Main kya hota hai?
JEE Main (Joint Entrance Examination Main) is India's national-level engineering entrance examination conducted by NTA (National Testing Agency). Approximately 13 lakh students appear for JEE Main every year, making it one of the largest competitive exams in the world.
JEE Main is held twice a year — Session 1 in January and Session 2 in April. The best of the two session percentiles is considered for merit. This dual-session format benefits students who perform poorly in one attempt.
JEE Main kya hota hai? JEE Main ek computer-based engineering entrance exam hai jo NTA conduct karta hai. Isme 90 questions hote hain — Physics, Chemistry, aur Mathematics mein 30-30 each. Total marks 300 hain. Sahi jawab par +4 aur galat par −1 mark milta hai. Yeh exam NITs, IIITs, aur CFTIs mein admission ke liye zaroori hai.
JEE Main serves two purposes: (1) direct admission to 31 NITs, 25+ IIITs, and various CFTIs through JoSAA counselling, and (2) as the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced — the entrance test for all 23 IITs.
JEE Main full form: Joint Entrance Examination Main. The exam is conducted in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode across 500+ exam centres in India and abroad. No physical calculator is allowed — only an on-screen virtual calculator is provided by NTA.
Negative keywords note: JEE Main is NOT the same as JEE Advanced. JEE Main is NOT conducted by CBSE (NTA took over in 2019). JEE Main is NOT a state-level exam — it is a national exam. JEE Main Paper 1 is for B.Tech/B.E. admissions; Paper 2 is for B.Arch/B.Planning.
