What is JEE Main? — JEE Main kya hota hai?

JEE Main (Joint Entrance Examination Main) is India's national-level engineering entrance examination conducted by NTA (National Testing Agency). Approximately 13 lakh students appear for JEE Main every year, making it one of the largest competitive exams in the world.

JEE Main is held twice a year — Session 1 in January and Session 2 in April. The best of the two session percentiles is considered for merit. This dual-session format benefits students who perform poorly in one attempt.

JEE Main kya hota hai? JEE Main ek computer-based engineering entrance exam hai jo NTA conduct karta hai. Isme 90 questions hote hain — Physics, Chemistry, aur Mathematics mein 30-30 each. Total marks 300 hain. Sahi jawab par +4 aur galat par −1 mark milta hai. Yeh exam NITs, IIITs, aur CFTIs mein admission ke liye zaroori hai.

JEE Main serves two purposes: (1) direct admission to 31 NITs, 25+ IIITs, and various CFTIs through JoSAA counselling, and (2) as the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced — the entrance test for all 23 IITs.

JEE Main full form: Joint Entrance Examination Main. The exam is conducted in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode across 500+ exam centres in India and abroad. No physical calculator is allowed — only an on-screen virtual calculator is provided by NTA.

Negative keywords note: JEE Main is NOT the same as JEE Advanced. JEE Main is NOT conducted by CBSE (NTA took over in 2019). JEE Main is NOT a state-level exam — it is a national exam. JEE Main Paper 1 is for B.Tech/B.E. admissions; Paper 2 is for B.Arch/B.Planning.

JEE Main Preparation Strategy 2026

1
Start with NCERT
NCERT Class 11 and 12 books are the single most important resource for JEE Main, especially for Chemistry. 40–50% of Chemistry questions are directly NCERT-based. Do not skip NCERT for any topic.
2
Chapter-wise Mock Tests
After completing each chapter, immediately take a chapter-wise mock test on HenceProve. This locks in concepts and exposes gaps before they accumulate. Use the JEE Main Chapter-wise Mock Tests for all 56 chapters.
3
Solve Previous Year Papers
Solve at least 10 years of JEE Main previous year papers (2015–2025) under timed conditions. NTA repeats concept patterns — about 30% of each paper is inspired by previous year questions.
4
Weekly Full-Length Tests
Once you have covered 60% of the syllabus, take one full-length mock test every week. JEE Main is a 3-hour stamina exam — students who only do chapter practice perform much worse in actual exams.
5
Focus on High-Weightage Topics
Prioritize: Mathematics (Calculus 22–25%, Coordinate Geometry 18–20%), Physics (Electrostatics 12–15%, Modern Physics 10–12%), Chemistry (Physical Chemistry 35–40%). Do not spend equal time on all topics.
6
Error Log
Maintain an error log of every mistake in mock tests. Review it every week. Most students repeat the same 10–15 types of mistakes. Eliminating recurring errors is the fastest route to a higher score.

What JEE Main is NOT (Common Misconceptions)

MYTHJEE Main is conducted by CBSE
FACTNTA (National Testing Agency) has conducted JEE Main since 2019. CBSE no longer conducts JEE.
MYTHJEE Main and JEE Advanced are the same exam
FACTJEE Main and JEE Advanced are two completely separate exams. JEE Main is conducted by NTA; JEE Advanced is conducted by IITs. You MUST pass JEE Main first to be eligible for JEE Advanced.
MYTHJEE Main has an age limit
FACTThere is NO age limit for JEE Main. Any candidate who has passed or is appearing in Class 12 with PCM is eligible, regardless of age.
MYTHJEE Main score directly gives IIT admission
FACTJEE Main gives admission to NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs — NOT IITs. For IIT admission, you must separately qualify JEE Advanced.
MYTHPhysical calculator is allowed in JEE Main
FACTNo physical calculator is allowed. NTA provides an on-screen virtual calculator. Bringing a calculator to the exam is a disqualification offense.
MYTHYour Class 12 percentage does NOT matter
FACTYou need minimum 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST/PwD) to claim your NIT/IIIT seat through JoSAA, even if you rank well in JEE Main.
